A fruition.
March 27, 2008One of my most favorite lines from any book is from the “Mallorean” series of books by David Eddings. In it, a cranky, coarse, gnarled old wizard states, “Consistency is the defense of a weak mind.”
I’ve never been able to reason out whether or not this is true, but I like to think it is, if only because I am extremely inconsistent in many of my actions. The one that comes to mind (and sparked this entry) is my handling of social situations. I consider myself a fairly adaptive person, when I feel like it, but more often than not, in social situations where the conditions are not convenient or favorable, I just say fuck it. This includes uncomfortable environs, too much noise, unfamiliarity/incompatibility with the people around me, and many more. I am capable of overcoming all of these; I know this because I’ve done it often enough. But in the scheme of things, I generally bail in circumstances that are less than desirable. The reasons for this are extremely inconsistent in my own mind; it may have to do with uncomfortableness, but I think not so much. Why do I think this? Because I’m often uncomfortable around people, and all it takes is some suspension of apprehension and work to get around this. So maybe my inconsistent social habits are more a function of my lack of motivation to get to know people. Because I really don’t like people.
Yeah, that’s it.
Which is really inconsistent with my general views on people.
The only real explanation is my eccentricity.
It’s not “insanity” when you’re really smart.
Just as a heads up, I’m really very excited about my next post.
Awesome line. And if that’s the case, then my mind is a juggernaut.
Do you really not like people? I think life would get pretty boring without them…
Maybe I’ll write a post about my views on people in general. But no, I generally don’t hold people in high esteem until I get to know them as individuals. People as a whole are stupid, ugly, hateful, and dangerous. The one saving grace is that the category “people-as-a-group” is made up of individuals who have the potential to transcend the shit hole of humanity. Life would indeed be boring without people, but as it is now, people generally suck.
